Evening came on with one last shooting red ray of sunshine. The clouds were shimmering shades of pink as the sky held on to its blue shadows. It reminded me of the cotton candy that was sold during the autumn fairs. I wasn’t very hungry, so I just made myself a raisin bagel with cream cheese and a cup of tea. I sat down in the living room to read some of the books that Mr. Harbinger left. Hopefully it would give me some insight.
As the light outside grew dimmer, the darkness in the room grew larger. I turned on the small lamp beside the couch, Such giant shadows loomed on my walls. I was not finding what I wanted. These books were not being helpful. I wanted something else. I wanted to know what to do. My house was already secure, but how could I be secure? I didn’t feel safe inside my own home.
My thoughts were interrupted with a high screeching noise. I jumped from the couch to look outside and then realized it was just a cat. When I looked out my hidden peek hole through the window, I saw the hordes of wandering undead pass by my driveway. Listening closely, I could hear their moaning once again. They were back and in full force tonight. Where had they been the past few days? It was almost as if they knew the military was out there and the zombies were afraid of them.
A few of the creatures were lurking on the sidewalk. They tried to move into my yard, but were denied the privilege when shocks of electricity seared through their bodies. Arms flailed and bodies fell into other bodies. Others just stepped over them and kept on going. Eventually they all wandered off in search of more flesh to devour instead of just one cat.
I checked all the locks on the doors downstairs and secured all the windows as well. The fence was on outside obviously. I went upstairs to get ready for bed. It was dark and solemn. I missed my son. I did not want to be by myself right now. I was feeling extremely lonely and vulnerable. I peered out the window in my bedroom to see the streetlights shining over a congregation of dead faces staring up at my house.
