The phone went dead. No one was on the other end. What was going on? Why would they take Kim and her family at gunshot? I’m sure Kim and her family did not want to go willingly. She had too much going on. She was our mechanical genius of the group. Why did the government barge in and take all her stuff? Indeed, there was much more going on than what was being broadcasted on the news!
I immediately called Tom and told him what happened to Kim. In order to save time, he would call Mary and Kathy. I was to notify Coralee. We would meet at my house as soon as possible. This was an emergency!
I called Coralee, but there was no answer. I hung up and tried again, thinking maybe I misdialed. Still - no answer. What was happening? Did the government get Coralee too? This was the one communication line that was meant exclusively for the Book Club members. Why wasn’t she answering? I hung up the receiver and just sat there. Coralee was my closest friend. She was the one who first introduced herself when I moved in. I always felt closer to her than anyone else in the group. I knew Kim, but we really didn’t know each other that well. It was always Coralee who made me feel like I was a genuine part of the group. I couldn’t believe they had grabbed her as well.
Suddenly, my other phone rang. I picked it up and said hello. It was Coralee.
“April, is that you? Did you just try and call me?”
“Yeah, where were you?”
“ I was hiding and I couldn’t get to my secret phone. It was in the other room.”
“Why were you hiding?” I asked.
“Well, I was looking out my upstairs window, and I saw this truck driving back and forth on my street. It looked like the ones on television. I didn’t see it stop or anything, but it was freaking me out. Then I switched on my husband’s ham radio to see if I could hear anything on that. While I was listening, there was a knock on my front door. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I didn’t answer it. I also didn’t answer the phone. If anyone outside heard it, they must have thought I wasn’t home. So I stayed hidden until now. April, it was strange. Who do you think it could have been? We all call one another before we come over. Do you think it was the guys in the truck?”
“I’m not sure Coralee. But that’s why I was calling you to begin with. Some military soldiers took Kim and her family. They barged into their house and held them at gunpoint and escorted them into a truck. They also confiscated all of her work in the warehouse and took that too! She was secretly calling me from the bathroom! Then she hung up. You need to come over immediately for a meeting. Tom is calling everyone else. How fast can you get here?”
“I will be there as soon as I think the coast is clear here.” She replied. “I’ll look and see if the truck is gone, then I’ll sneak out the back. The hubby took our truck, so I’ll have the car. Be there as soon as I can. Start without me if you need to.” She paused. “And April?”
“Yes,” I replied.
“You be careful. Don’t let anyone know you’re home unless its one of us. Okay?”
“Okay,” I answered. Then we hung up.
I let out a huge sigh. I hadn’t realized I was holding my breath. I stopped for a moment and gathered my wits. Everyone would be here soon. I went upstairs to watch for each of them and to turn off the fence when needed. All I could do was wait.
