I sat in the kitchen just watching the little television on the counter. The same news was being broadcasted on every station. It looked like something from out of an old science fiction movie. Men and women in military uniforms with specialized weapons were hoarding people onto trucks and other vehicles. The funny thing was that these were not zombies! They were everyday normal healthy people and they were being transported to an undisclosed location! I had to wonder why the reporter particularly said undisclosed. Did he think the zombies would run out and use their GPS systems to find these rations of people? Or did the government not want to reveal what would be a safe harbor for the general population? Either way, it was a scary scenario to see ordinary people being taken from their homes and herded like sheep to slaughter. Not everyone was boarding amicably. Some men were fighting with the military personnel. Some children were being separated from their parents and loaded unto a different vehicle. Mothers were screaming! Chaos seemed to fill the television screen.
I turned off the TV. I had to wonder how I would feel in that kind of circumstance. I understood that the government was only doing what it thought was best. In times of disaster or national trouble, the military is called in to protect the people of this country. A zombie apocalypse would definitely fit this description. If the ordinary citizen could not defend himself or support himself during this time, he would need help in order to survive. It would be better to move to a place that would provide protection and living necessities.
Yet, what if a citizen was somewhat prepared for such a catastrophe? What if plans were made, supplies gathered, protection provided? What if all the groundwork and research was done to supply an ordinary citizen with the life he needed to live during this time? Would he want to move from the safety and domain of his own home? What if he was the haven for others to also survive such an apocalypse? What would happen? What would happen if the government decided to take me from my sanctuary? What would I do? What could I do? How would my son ever find me? Would I be able to find him? What would happen to Coralee, or Tom, or Kathy, or Mary, or Kim and their families?
My thoughts were interrupted by a shrill noise from the other room. It was the secret phone that Kim had given me. I answered it and heard whispering on the other end.
“April, I can’t talk very much. The government just barged into our home. They are taking us somewhere, I’m not sure. They ransacked our warehouse and threw everything in the back of their trucks. They have us at gunpoint. I’m in the bathroom. Don’t believe everything you see on the news. This is not just a routine evacuation. There is more going on than they want you to know. Call an emergency meeting. Keep us in prayer. Got to go - Bye!”
It was Kim. The military had come and taken her and her family away. This was happening in my own neighborhood - to my own friends! I had to call the Book Club!
