I woke up this morning to the distinct sound of an alarm going off. Not the kind that’s by your bedside - which you smack a few times before getting up, but the kind that comes from outside. It was strange. The last time I had heard an alarm like that was before I had moved and it was a tornado warning. I jumped out of bed and turned on the television to see what was going on. No information there, just the regular style journalism talking about the MRSA virus and how the whole nation was suffering. The president had declared the situation a national epidemic and was advising people to be extremely cautious when interacting with anyone with a cough or a cold. Where has he been lately? Congress must have him hidden away from all other personnel and outsiders. I shook my head in disbelief and turned off the TV. Still the alarm was sounding.
I looked outside my window. Nothing seemed out of place. There were no extreme winds or rain. The weather actually looked rather nice. Then I heard the helicopters. High above the trees in the yard, they were flying over the area. I could hear the loud whirring noise as it came closer to my house. There must have been about three of them, circling around the neighborhood. I knew there had been helicopters before. Mr. Harbinger had told me before he sold me the house. It was one of the reasons he had wanted to leave so desperately. He believed the government was surveying the area for one reason or another. This happened right before everyone in the community became sick. At first I thought the elderly gentleman was a bit delusional; but the more I learn, the more I am convinced he was a very intelligent man.
The alarm stopped and the choppers disappeared. I sat and looked out the window for a bit longer. The street below could be seen from where I was. They were very quiet. I thought back. In an earlier time, when helicopters flew overhead all the children would be outside trying to catch a glimpse of these mechanical birds. They would wave at the choppers and wonder where they came from or why they were flying over their houses. It was exciting. Now, it was just foreboding. We still wonder why they are here or where they are going, but no one wants to be outside and no one is waving.
