We were as quiet as possible as we tracked back to Wayne’s. It was almost too quiet. Usually the walking monsters were all over the streets during this time. Something was extremely different tonight. In this world of bizarre, even this was wrong.
As soon as we reached the door, Mary let us in. She and Tom gave Kathy a big hug and lovingly warned her not to do that again. While we were gone, Tom and Mary had cleaned up the place and hosed everything down. There was water all over the floor, but there was no sign that anyone had died here or had even been there. It was almost brand new. It was actually very sad. We decided it was time to go. We still had to dispose of Wayne’s body and get home while it was still safe to travel. Tom suggested we bow our heads to pray before we left and we all agreed it was a great idea. We prayed for guidance and wisdom and mercy during this time in our lives. We prayed for a hedge of protection over us and our families, wherever they may be. We prayed for safe travels and guardian angels to watch over us. We thanked God for the relationship we had with one another and we asked him to take care of Wayne’s family, if they were still alive. No one really wanted to stop. It was like we were pouring our hearts out to Him and to one another. As we stood there, holding hands, we finally came to a peaceful place. I squeezed Coralee’s hand and Mary’s hand, and I’m sure everyone else did at the same time. We were finished and it was time to leave.
Tom and Mary and Kathy decided to all ride in the SUV together, so Kathy could tell them what had happened and so they could take care of Wayne properly. They had strapped Wayne’s body onto the top of the SUV, instead of keeping him in the truck. Mary figured it wouldn’t smell so much if the body was outside and they were driving fast. We took a bottle of hunting detergent and poured it over him, just in case. Tom assured us that Coralee and I were not needed to help with this, so we got ready to go home. We would follow each other until the intersection and then divide off. Mary promised to call everyone when the job was finished and we had all reached home safely.
With our weapons ready, we climbed into our vehicles and drove away. It was peculiar to see the SUV pull away with a giant bundle strapped to the roof, knowing what was inside. The trash bags were flapping in the wind as Mary, Tom and Kathy drove down the street. The evening air had cooled off and a slight fog was drifting towards town. The streets were still empty and the quiet was overpowering.
