Everything appeared okay. Ed and I didn’t see anything or anybody in the area. Ed slowly made his way to the front of the store house and rapped on the door. The noise felt like it echoed throughout the whole yard. Ed and I both stiffened our backs and prepared for something to come screeching at us. Nothing happened.
Ed tried to talk through the door without being too conspicuous. “Mom, are you there? Can you hear me, Kathy? Its me, Ed.”
Not a sound was heard. He tried again a little louder. “Ma, Kathy! It’s me, Ed. Unlock the door. Let’s get out of here.”
I came closer to the entrance with Ed, but stayed behind him to cover our backs. “Try a little louder. They were hiding, remember.”
Ed said, “I’ll do better than that. Watch.”
Ed then proceeded to take out one of his guns with a silencer and shot the outside lock off its hinge. Then he jiggled the door, and spoke into the slight opening.
“Come on, Ma. It’s me, Ed. The coast is clear. Open the door and lets get out of here. Quickly.”
That’s when we heard movement inside the storage shed. Kathy opened the lock from inside and the door opened. Both women appeared fatigued and strained. Ed grabbed Mary and hugged her tight.
“Don’t you ever do this to me again!” He reprimanded her. “From now on, I’ll come get what we need here. You understand me?!”
Mary hugged Ed back and said, ”Yes, son. Whatever you say.”
Kathy interrupted the reunion. “Thanks Ed for coming to get us. We better get a move on though. We still need to pack the truck and get out of here. It’s getting dark.”
Mary looked at me and asked,” What are you doing here? Eddie, how could you let April come here too? She could have gotten hurt.”
“Didn’t have a choice, Ma. She said you would have killed her if she let me come alone. She covered me pretty good though. I think she can hold her own now.”
“That’s true, Mary.” I said. “You remember the rules. No one is allowed to go out without a partner anymore. We need to watch out for one another.”
“Well, I appreciate what you did for my son and that you came to rescue us. Thank you so much. Now, Kathy’s right. Let’s get out of here as fast as possible. Where’s the truck?”
We looked over at their vehicle and saw both their doors open. Ed and Kathy went over to investigate whether the truck was still usable. Mary and I gathered some of the supplies and brought the boxes out.
“Well, the truck is still workable, but the radio is gone and so are the seat covers, for some reason. I think we can load her up though.” Ed reported.
“Okay. Let’s do it.” Mary responded.
We proceeded to stock the truck with everything we needed and a few extras that we could store at my house instead. Ed installed another lock on the outside with an extra one Kathy found inside. We closed everything up tight and then decided who would drive home in which car. Ed chose to drive the truck with Kathy, and I would drive Mary home with the SUV. Neither Ed nor I thought the other ladies should drive. I would follow Ed and we were all headed to their place.
Before we all got into our vehicles, Ed ran back to the storage shed and looked around. He then stooped down and picked up the little puppy we had found earlier. It was in the same place Ed had placed it. Ed cuddled the doggie in his arms and then placed him in Mary’s lap.
“Here, Ma. He can ride home with you.”
Mary looked at her son and just shook her head and smiled.
