Ed picked me up in his SUV. Needless to say, it was armored to the hilt. The windows were tinted and made with that special fiberglass stuff they use in airplanes. The tires were the same kind used on tanks in the military. The radio inside was connected to all sorts of stations and the radar protection was incredible. Ed even had a mini fridge that was run on some kind of electricity from underneath the dashboard. I had to use steps just to get into the passenger seat.
I looked in the back of the vehicle and saw that Ed had piled in every weapon he could find. Stashed in pockets behind the seats was the ammunition for the guns and arrows for the crossbows. Above our heads, I saw that Ed had packed the Bohemian in a special compartment. He was prepared for anything.
Ed asked me, “Are you alright with this? I don’t want you to freak out on me when we get there. I plan on going in fully armed and blast Mom and Kathy out of there.”
I understood. “I’m alright. I’ve been practicing and Kathy actually thinks I’m pretty good.”
“Oh, I don’t expect you’ll even have to shoot anything. I’m pretty fast and accurate. These freaking creatures won’t even see me coming. I just meant, are you alright coming with me? This could get gruesome. I don’t know what we’ll find there.”
I smiled at Ed’s concern. “I’ll be fine. You need someone to watch your back. I can do that. Okay?”
Ed nodded. “Okay, lets go.”
As we were driving, not much was said. We listened to the police scanner and rode on. Ed went down all sorts of strange roads. This was not the way I went with Kathy at all. We came across a bunch of zombies at one intersection, but Ed just opened his window and threw out a grenade. We watched it explode in the rear view mirrors.
Ed just chuckled. “I love doing that.”
As we came up to the entrance of the storage areas, I noticed the gate had been torn down, or should I say driven into. It was a huge mess. It was gated for protection, but that was gone now. Ed drove slowly up the alleyways, watching for anything that moved or got into his way. We didn’t see anything, but that didn’t mean nothing was there. As we turned the corner to where our storage area was, we expected to see dead zombie bodies all over the place. It was empty. Not one creepy creature was there.
We stopped the SUV next to Kathy’s truck. It was still intact, but both doors were left wide open. That was odd too. Ed looked around before unlocking his door. I got out my gun and mini grenades and prepared to cover Ed with whatever he was doing. He got out and went to the back of the SUV to suit up. I got out to watch his back. Ed was decked out with as many weapons as he could possibly carry and use efficiently. I thought I was watching a Terminator movie, there was so much artillery going on. Last, but not least, Ed grabbed the Bohemian out of its sheath and proceeded to head to the storage shed.
I walked backwards behind Ed, so nothing would catch us off guard. My heart was racing and my breath was short. I couldn’t believe we were doing this. I couldn’t believe I was doing this!
The coast was clear so far. We did see drag marks on the ground. Blood was smeared in strange lines, leading away from the area. Someone must have dragged the corpses away. This rescue trip was altogether bizarre. Ed and I both stopped as we heard something whining off to the side of the building. Is that where the remnants of the bodies were? Were they still thriving and coming for us now? Ed looked at me and jerked his head in the same direction as the noise. I understood. He was headed that way and I was to follow. Ed had the Bohemian firmly in hand and was ready to knock some heads off.
As we stepped to the side of the storage unit, there were no bodies to be found. Snuggled up against the corner was a very small puppy. It had managed to tangle itself in some kind of shirt material and was just lying there waiting to be saved. Ed stopped. I could see his shoulders relax for just one moment. He checked his surroundings and then he knelt before the little pooch. I carefully guarded his movements as he untangled the little fellow and threw the material out of harm’s way. The puppy just sat there in amazement, just as I did while I watched Ed take time out to rescue him.
Ed looked back at me and smiled. “Now, let’s go get Mom and Kathy out of here.”
