I was in the basement when my phone rang. I decided to hide down there until I could think of something else. It was so unlikely that no one was answering the phone. I made sure all the doors were locked and the fence was turned on and then I ran to the secret passage and went downstairs.
I don’t know how long I had been wandering down there when I heard the ringing. I brought the phone down with me just in case. (At least part of my brain was working.) I picked up the receiver and heard Ed’s voice on the other end.
“April? Is this you? This is Ed.”
“Its me. Did you hear from Mary yet? I’ve been trying to call everyone, but no one answers.” I replied.
“That’s why I’m calling. Mary and Kathy are hiding out at the storage area. They went to pick up some supplies and got stuck out there. I could barely hear her, but she said something about some strange men and a huge band of zombies.”
“Are they alright?” I interrupted.
“Ma had just opened the shed door and was inside when Kathy yelled that something was coming. They didn’t have time to get into the truck, so they hid in the storeroom. They heard moaning and groaning and scraping outside, so they figured it was the zombies. Then they heard gunshots and scuffling. They didn’t dare look out the peephole, so they just hid behind the boxes. Ma was sure that someone was going to look for them, but Kathy locked the door from the inside, so no one could get in anyway. All they’re worried about now is the truck and how to get home.”
“Is there anything we can do?” I wondered.
Ed was adamant. “I need to do something, I can’t let Mom and Kathy just stay there. I need to save them. I’m going out to get them once I’m off the phone with you. I’ve got all sorts of weapons and ammo. Anything or anyone gets in my way - they’re gonna get blasted.”
“Ed, come pick me up. I can be your back-up. You’ll need someone to watch behind you. Can you come get me or do you want me to drive over there?”
“You don’t need to come April. I can handle this.” He said.
“Ed, your mom would kill me and you if she knew you came without a back up. That’s one of the rules for survival. Always have a back-up. I’m coming whether you like it or not. I’ll be there as fast as I can.”
Ed jumped in. “ Never mind then. I’ll come get you. This way you’re not driving by yourself. Mom would kill me if anything happened to you too. “
He laughed. “ Either way, Ma’s gonna kill the both of us for trying to save them. I’ll be right there. I’ll have the SUV, so be looking out for me.”
Then he hung up. I went upstairs and got ready.
Then I waited for Ed.
